Skating for a Cause

Boarding and skateboarders have always seemed to have gotten a “bum rap” from society. That’s why it’s very rare to hear the words skateboarder and philanthropist used in the same sentence but when talking about Ryan Sheckler, both of those words come to mind.

On Saturday May 3, 2014 Professional skateboarder Ryan Sheckler and the Sheckler Foundation hosted its 5th annual “Skate for a Cause” charity event held at Etnies skate park in Lake Forest, CA. Some of the top skaters in the world attended the “just for fun” skating competition which included a Legends contest, skateboard cross race and best trick just to name a few. Also, on hand was a carnival-style midway where major companies and sponsors like Oakley sunglasses, Plan B Skateboards and Tilly’s clothing Store set up gaming booths for the event goers with all proceeds going back to The Sheckler Foundation.

Reedley, CA resident Jeremy Torres was one of the few lucky people to experience it, up close, and personal. Upon arrival Jeremy’s mother Sarina Torres checked him in and was given a wristband which allowed him access inside the skating area where he met and mingled with the pros and amateur skaters. He received a limited-edition skate deck, hat and shirt commemorating the event. Meeting the host Ryan Sheckler was definitely one of the day’s highlights for Jeremy.

The event raised more than $93,000. The proceeds go towards the community and to charities worldwide. Some people they enrich are children who have been injured in action sports.
